The African Union Commission welcomes the new President of the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), Her Excellency Mrs. Monica Geingos, First Lady of the Republic of Namibia. She takes over from Mrs Antoinette Sassou Nguesso, First Lady of The Republic of Congo. OAFLAD has made contributions to improving health outcomes, especially in the areas of HIV, maternal and neonatal health and malaria across Africa, in its 20 years of existence.

In January 2018, the African Union Commission co-launched the Free To Shine Campaign with the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) to reinforce the political commitment of African nations to end childhood AIDS and keep mothers healthy. The Campaign is implemented under the leadership of Ministries of Health and respective Offices of the First Lady, national stakeholders, and community leaders.
